The .au domain has undergone some changes recently, which make it much simpler for businesses and individuals to register and maintain Australian domain names.

The below information has been sourced from Melbourne IT to help explain the changes to domain name registrations.
What has changed
1. The changes to the .com.au policy will apply to all New .com.au registrations. At the time of renewal of licence all licence holders will need to verify their continuing eligibility.
2. If you have an Australian Trademark, you can now register a .com.au, based on that Trademark.
3. Generic words are now allowed – Some have already been allocated via the auDA Auction process.
4. The restrictive Derivation rule no longer applies. This rule meant that the domain name must contain the same letters (in sequence) as the legal entity being used by the applicant.
5. This has now been replaced by a more flexible approach called Close and Substantial Rule.
6. There is no longer any restriction of one .com.au domain name per entity. Multiple names per entity may now be registered. For e.g. you need no longer register multiple business names simply to apply for a different .com.au domain name.
Recent Changes
1. auDA has determined that some restrictions still remain on Australian place names. auDA does not allow registration of any place name that has a Postcode (as defined by Australia Post).
2. Certain words are still restricted. These are called "Reserved" words by auDA and are mostly words restricted by law, e.g. ANZAC.
3. A .com.au or .net .au registrant still needs to be an Australian registered company or trading under a registered business name in any Australian State or Territory.
